Truck books for kids are the perfect solution for a vehicle loving kiddo who doesn’t like to read. By giving them a book about their favorite topic, you’re bringing reading and their interests together. These children’s books about transportation are sure to be a hit with your little mechanic to be. Any kid would love to find these truck books in their pile of birthday gifts!
A few weeks ago I went to pick up Ryan at school. He was sitting at his favorite table reading a book about trucks.
Immediately, he asked if we could bring it home. I declined, explaining to his sweet teacher that we had 28 truck books at home.
Literally. I counted – we have 28 truck books for kids.
A solution for a truck loving preschooler
It’s no surprise to anyone who knows Ryan that we have a lot of truck books for kids. He’s genuinely obsessed. He also is the kind of kid I can not get to sit still for the life of me.
So, anything that encourages him to sit and read a book sounds like heaven for this tired momma.
That being said, those books get old. You know what I mean. By the 15th read in 3 days of the same. dang. book. you would rather start reading the encyclopedia on trucks than subject yourself to a 16th read.
So I’m here today with my top 10 truck books for kids. Books that you might not have at home already, but your kids are going to adore. You’re welcome!

Top 10 Truck Books for Kids
Little Blue Truck Leads the Way by Alice Schertle
This is a favorite around here! The Little Blue Truck series is so cut
I Stink! by Kate and Jim McMullan
If your kids are fans of the online show, Stinky and Dirty, they’ll love the books that inspired the show! I Stink is about a garbage truck that loves to be stinky. Fair warning – it is a book about garbage trucks and what goes in them. It can be a little ick. The word ‘poop’ is also in there.
Did you watch The Busy World of Richard Scarry as a kid? I was so excited when I saw this old book and could introduce some of my favorite characters. Despite the age, my kids love it. It has hundreds of real and funny trucks – from fire trucks to a silly pickle truck!
- Where Do Diggers Sleep at Night? by Brianna Caplan Sayres
If you read before bed, this one is perfect! Diggers have surprisingly similar bedtime routines to little boys and girls. This one is also perfect for kids who worry about their toys before bedtime.
Old MacDonald Had a Truck by Steve Goetz
My favorite truck book by far. This one takes a
Mighty, Mighty Construction Site by Sherri Duskey Rinker
Pete the Cat: Construction Destruction by James Dean
Confession: I never got the Pete the Cat thing until Ryan started coming home from school extolling the virtues of the blue cat. Turns out his teacher loves the series and they read it often. I went out and grabbed this construction themed one because of course and it’s a staple around here.
Dig! by Andrea Zimmerman and David Clemesha
Honestly, this is one of my favorites mostly because it’s not one of those crazy popular ones. I grabbed it on a whim a year or two ago from Target when it was on sale and Ryan fell in love. We read it 2-3 times a day for months. Join Mr. Rally and his dog as they work through their day as they, “dig up dirt, dig up clay!” all day long!
Grandma Drove the Garbage Truck by Katie Clark
Grandma owns a garbage company and her 3 sons usually drive the trucks. Until they all get sick and Grandma needs to step in! Both of my boys think this truck book for kids is absolutely hilarious so we read it often!
Smash! Mash! Crash! There Goes the Trash! by Barbara Odanaka
Garbage day is a BIG DEAL at my house. Partially because the boys love trucks, but also because Daddy fixes garbage trucks. This book goes through the excitement of watching the garbage truck come each week and crush your trash!
Okay so tell me – what kind of books do your kids like to read? What is your favorite truck book for kids? Let me know in the comments!
