When I was a kid, my brother and I would spend every other weekend and a day or two a week at my mom’s house after my parents got divorced. She lived about an hour from my dad’s house, but she worked in our school system so we’d wake up early and brave NJ Parkway traffic to get to school on time Monday morning.
Waking up totally blew – but it was sometimes worth it because every morning we’d stop at Quick Chek on the way and get breakfast. My mom let us pick whatever we’d want. Sometimes I’d pick something reasonable – an egg sandwich, a buttered roll – but sometimes I went a little rogue and got something decidedly not reasonable. My favorite was chocolate milkshakes from that cool machine that blends up the frozen cups (anyone know what I’m talking about? Those F’real things?) but sometimes I would turn to those lovely pre-packaged treats. My favorite was Tasty Kakes – if you’re not in the distribution area of a good ol’ Tasty Kake, I am sad for you – but mostly, I loved those little packs of mini chocolate frosted donuts that came in a pack of 3 or 4.
