Merlin Magic Sleep Suit Review

Merlin Magic Sleep Suit can be a total gamechanger for some parents sleep. if your baby is struggling with swaddle transitions or sufering from a sleep regression, this could be a great option for your family!

My oldest son was a terrible sleeper. Horrible. He had MSPI and colic and basically didn’t sleep through the night until my middle was born.

My middle was a lot better, but by no means a great sleeper.

My third baby came home from the NICU and was an amazing sleeper. Slept through the night starting around 2 months. It was amazing. Until the 4 month sleep regression hit.

Merlin’s Magic Sleep Suit to the Rescue

That sleep regression was rough, to say the least. She was rolling, so she needed out of the swaddle but she really needed the swaddle to sleep.

I bought a few thigns before caving with the Merlin’s Magic Sleep Suit.

GAME CHANGER.

About the sleep suit

What is it, who created it, when is is uspposed to do

Merlin’s Magic Sleep Suit is a swaddle transition suit that is thick and padded, allowing for a snuggly feel with the safety of having arms free.

When in it, baby lays with her arms straight out with little ability to move them and jolt herself awake.

The concept is to continue the confined, comforting style of a swaddle after it’s no longer safe to swaddle your baby because of rolling. This ideally helps baby settle quicker and sleep deep and in longer stretches.

So, does it work?

YES! With the sleep suit, we were able to get Ella to self soothe to sleep almost immediately and sleep deeper.

Is she back to sleeping htrough the night? Not completely, but I’m pretty sure that’s a “me” problem and a breastfeeding baby problem.

But naps? They’re longer and more sound. She wakes up less with simple noises. SUPER important when you live in a small house with kids and have two bigs loud as can be.

Pros of the Sleep Suit

It’s super cozy and warm. We started using it right as the weather got colder, so it’s been great to keep her warm.

Sleep safe. Since baby’s arms are free, there is a reduced risk of suffocation if she rolls during sleep, like there would be with a traditional swaddle.

Constricting, so it is comforting for littles to make for easy sleep times.

Double zip. This makes it super easy to zip baby into the sleep suit.

Cons of the Sleep Suit

If you’re not in a cool environment it could get hot. We used ours just as winter was starting so it was a huge plus for us. But if it was summer, overheating could be a problem.

Require another transition. Obvously it could be a huge godsend to transition out of a swaddle, but you’ll also require another transition down the road.

Some report that since it keeps baby on her back, if she doesn’t move enough it could worsen flat head spots.

Less freedom in sleep. Your baby won’t have the same natural freedom in sleep that babies’ eventually will learn.

So should I get a Merlin’s Magic Sleep Suit?

I struggled with this for each of my kids and finally caved with my third. It’s not necessarily cheap, but it definitely changed thing for us.

I highly suggest trying to transition out of the swaddle first. If, like us, it doesn’t seem to stick, this is a great option. But if it’s not needed, obviously it’s not a worthwhile investment.
