Enter easy solutions like cookie cutters to make life a bit more fun without the work.
Heart Egg in a Hole
My dad was the king of making an egg in a hole (some call it an egg in a basket) when I was growing up. It’s a skill I learned and now make for my own boys.
When I saw these cute heart shaped cutters on Amazon and they somehow ended up in my cart and then at my house, I knew my first dish would be a fun egg heart.

How to make these fun eggs
If you’ve never made an egg in a hole, the steps are so simple. A few steps also make for great cooking tasks for kids!
- Grab a slice of bread. I used white but wheat works great as well.
- Butter both sides. You can alternately melt a pat of butter in the pan or a bit of oil or spray oil, but I love the crispy edges you get when you butter both sides.
- Use a cookie cutter to make your shape.
- Place into a small pan on medium low. I like to keep it low so the egg has time to set and the bread has time to toast.
- Crack an egg into your hole, add salt and pepper as desired. If you think it might stick, spray a bit of nonstick spray into the hole before adding the egg.
- When the edges and bottom of your egg start to set, gently flip your bread and cook until the desired doneness. 2 minutes on each side usually works best for me.
That’s it! If your kids aren’t fans of whole eggs, scrambling works great as well. Consider adding some chopped red veggies or a dot of red food coloring to add some extra fun.
Serve with some heart strawberries that are ridiculously easy to make.
