If you’ve got a little dino lover in your house, you need these dinosaur books for preschoolers. Have prehistoric fun with dinosaur books for kids! Whether you’re looking for a dinosaur story book to read to your kids at bedtime or a fun dinosaur picture book to read and connect with your kids, they will love these picks!
While Ryan might be obsessed with all things truck, my other little guy is all about dinosaurs. From day one, he loved animals, but as soon as he realized the magic of dinosaurs, he fell in love. One of the first real things I remember him saying as a baby was, “dinosaur, raaah!” after watching Peppa Pig a few too many times.
As a kid, I loved dinosaurs as well so it’s been fun sharing that with him. I can proudly state that I know the scientific names for almost all of the dinosaurs. I’m pretty sure I look absolutely crazy sitting with a 2 year old and explaining the difference between a brontosaurus and a brachiosaurus, but hey – it makes him happy, so I’ll go with it.
While I will never (ever) be the kind of mom who teaches at home or home schools, I do put a lot of value in reading. After Ryan, I definitely realized that the key to getting the kids interested in reading was to force feed (I kid) them lots of books on their favorite topic – hence these dinosaur books for kids.
Every night I let the boys pick a book out to read in Ryan’s bed, cuddled together. Almost ever night, Ryan grabs one of his (many, many) truck books and Owen grabs a fun dinosaur book for preschoolers. After the truck books for kids post was so popular, I thought I’d also share some of our favorite dinosaur books for kids.

Roaring Good Dinosaur Books for Preschoolers
These are my top 10 favorite dinosaur books for kids – most are pretty modern, have really fun or silly stories, and even better illustrations. Nothing dry, boring, or dated here!
This was one of the first dinosaur books we bought Owen – in fact, we bought the truck one for Ryan when he was a baby – but it’s so fun. Huge pictures, super solid and a big size, so it’s fun and exciting for little hands.
How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight? by Jane Yolen
This book explaining how dinos say goodnight is one of my favorite dinosaur books for preschoolers – asking questions like, “does a dinosaur slam his tail and pout?” in response to the question of how dinosaurs say goodnight, it’s helped us with bed time tantrums.

Okay, so this one is technically a dragon book, but Owen adores it. This silly rhyming picture book tells about George’s amazing adventure with a box of donuts and a time machine. If your kids like the “Dragons Love Tacos” books, they’ll love this one as well.
Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs by Mo Willems
We grabbed our first Mo Willems book on sale at Kohls a year or two ago and I fell in love with his style. This silly tale takes a traditional story and puts a prehistoric twist on it in this dinosaur book for preschoolers. If you’re tired of the same old fairy tales, you’re going to LOVE this one.
