Oh, hey 2016 – it’s been nice knowin’ ya, but your time is almost up! Time to welcome in a brandy dandy new year, which means it’s time to reflect on the year and make goals for the new year! I have a love-hate relationship with new year’s goals – I hate to call them resolutions – because, they kind of feel fake and ingenuine. I mean, what’s so special about January first that makes you more likely to reach goals? Nothing, really. And I’m sure if I had the patience to comb Google, I’d have a cool statistic about how many of those goals actually get met, but alas – I do not.
That being said, I think goals are fun and motivating, so I like setting them each year (and month and week because why not, right? (If you’re interested, here are my goals from 2016 – I even updated them yesterday to reflect on how I did!) Last year I cut myself a ton of slack in the goals department, not setting anything concrete because, ya know, I was pregnant. This year I’m not (definitely not.) so I’m challenging myself more. I’d like 2017 to be a year of me – no big, life changing events, please. (for reference: 2012 I was engaged, 2013 I graduated, got married, got pregnant, 2014 I had a baby, 2015 I got pregnant, 2016 I had another baby. It’s been wonderful, butI need a normal year, ha!)
So here they are – my 2017 goals!
Steady income. I might get some side eye for this, but I am in the camp that bloggers who work hard, create useful, engaging content, and hustle should be able to create some kind of an income. While I did this in 2016, I would like to create a consistent income that my family could rely on a bit more. Mommas got student loans, guys.
Figure out a schedule. I’ll talk about this a bit more, but I’ve been drowning a bit. I’m overwhelming myself, floundering a bit, and just feeling like I’m all over the place. let 2017 be the year that I figure it out – my blogging schedule, a promotion schedule, social media – all of it. Not intimidating at all, amirite!?
Write an ebook. Let’s talk about things that have been on my to start list for well over 6 months. –> EBOOK. I’ve got 2 – 3 solid ideas that I can’t wait to flesh out! Here’s to getting one out there this year.
Learn more about photography. My dad got my a lighting set up for my birthday and I’m determined to learn more about my camera, get out of ‘auto’ mode and kill it. Anyone have some great resources for someone with a Nikon D3100?
New recipe each month. Do any of you have a kitchen bucket list? A list of the million and seven things you want to try your hand at some day? I thought it would be fun to try a new recipe each month – something that intimidates me a bit, something that I’ve never tried doing. I’ll be sharing my challenge through the year, and I’d love if you would join in! PS is there anything you’d love to see my tackle? My list is still up in the air!
Work out 2x a week. Here’s the thing – I would love to workout daily, ubt right now it’s just not gonna happen. I tend to be an ‘all or nothing’ kind of person, so I will workout like crazy 7 days a week and burn myself out and then give it all up because it’s unreasonable. So right now, I think twice a week is doable. It is flexible enough that I can switch days out when someone is up all night or my day feels too packed and doesn’t feel suffocating. I’m actually hoping to start with yoga – I like yoga but always feel like it’s not ‘enough’ as a beginner, not burning enough calories or enough of a heart rate raise, but when your other ‘workout’ is chasing a 2 year old/nothing, it’s a great option. Does anyone have any tips for a beginner/novice yogi to start at home without going to a studio?
One date per month. Dating while you have kids is hard, you guys. But it’s important, I know! We had out first date sans kids since Ryan was born this year but haven’t done another yet. Here’s to prioritizing US in 2017!
Eczema. Again. It’s getting out of hand, so I’m giving up and heading to a doctor. I made an appointment for a dermatologist and I’m looking forward to hopefully figuring this out once and for all. Maybe.
Travel! I loved going on our first family vacation last fall. We’re planning another end of January, so this is a pretty easy goal. But I do want to take a few smaller trips this year – maybe to Boston to see my brother or something similar.
Preschool! Excuse me while I go cry in the corner – Ryan will be going to PRESCHOOL in the fall and omg I just can’t even. Like, how. This is less of a goal than it is just something that will be happening but still. I suppose, “emotionally survive your first going to school” is a goal.
Up my style, yo. I love me some Stitch Fix and I’m really trying to get out of my clothing comfort zone a bit. Jeans + tees are my jam for as long as I can remember, but I love looking at well dressed people and always with I was one. So question for all of my fabulously dressed peeps out there – WHERE DO YOU SHOP? I’m too old/ not trendy enough for my old stand bys (f21, tbh.) and everything else seems like crazy money. Let me know your fave online stores below! (most of my clothes are from Target these days, if that helps)
And that’s it! I think. Who knows. For now, it feels like enough, though so I’m sticking with it.
Moving on.. The State of the Blog Address!
Okay, it’s not that serious, but I thought it would be fun to name a yearly commentary on the blog after the US’s yearly update since there’s no way in hell I’ll ever be giving one of those. Then again, it wouldn’t be the first time some has said, “there is no way that person will ever in a million years be president,” only to be proved wrong…
Anyway, 2017 this little space of mine is going to be seeing some changes – good ones, I think! When 2016 started, I was posting Monday through Sunday – sometimes even twice a day. This continued through my pregnancy and even through Owen’s early months – if I remember correctly, I only missed one post right after Owen was born, because I’m a crazy person. For a while, it worked – the boys napped at the same time, I was awake a lot anyway, and Owen would happily sit in his bouncer on the kitchen table while I wrote.
WELL. Now I have 2 crazy boys who rarely ever nap at the same time (if at all -I’m looking at you, Ryan!) who are very much mobile and constantly getting into trouble. My mid-day naptime writing sesh is long gone, my friends. And to be totally honest with you all: I’ve been struggling. I dread having to write a daily post and think of something and I’m rushing and not putting out my best content. And you deserve more. You deserve well thought out, useful and relatable posts, not something I put together at midnight, rushing to get to sleep.
That being said, my posting schedule will be changing this year, or at least for the first couple of months. The second I decided this, it was light a GIANT weight was lifted off my shoulders. I LOVE blogging, I have a passion for writing and helping and sharing, and blogging has brought purpose and joy to my day as a SAHM and I have no intention of dropping it – I just need to make sure it’s enjoyable and beneficial for both myself AND my lovely readers. So for the time being, my schedule will look more like this:
Monday: Best of the Week – instead of best of the weekend, I’ll simply be sharing some of my favorite moments from the previous week – I’m sure my fellow homebody bloggers feel me when I say that sometimes, a weekend recap post can be stressful when you literally did nothing.
Tuesday: Content post – recipe, DIY, advice. Something that will bring VALUE to you and that you will hopefully benefit from.
Wednesday: Nothing. For the time being, I’m dropping WIAW – it was once one of my favorite posts to write and read, but I just don’t feel like it’s providing the kind of value I want to bring to you, so the time/benefit ratio just isn’t there. I have a few ideas up my sleeve for bringing it back on occasion, but for now, for my own sanity, it’s taking a break.
Thursday: Content post – this may or may not be a Thinking Out Loud post, depending on the week. I definitely feel like confining myself to specific posts on specific days has been adding to the stress.
Friday: Friday favorites, revamped. I’m hoping to bring a bit more structure to Friday favorites but I’m still figuring it out. And for weeks where I skip Monday’s best of the week (as may happen) I’ll be smuching it into Friday.
And that’s it! (except for Share the Wealth Sunday, but since it’s an easy post to actually put together I don’t count it.) I hope you all understand that my main focus for cutting back is to make sure I am supplying you with the BEST content I can put out – nothing rushed or unfocused. If I’m not helping, I don’t see the point in blogging.
There it is, my friends – goals and the blog. I have a great feeling about 2017 – 2016 brought me a lot of things and had some amazing moments, but 2017 – you guys, it gives me shivers each time I think of it and I can’t quite put my finger on why, but I’m liking it.
So tell me – what are your goals for 2017? Have you ever had to take a step back and restructure something? Do you hate me for cutting back? Let me know in the comments!
